Baseball JVs fall to Ontario 14s 10-5 in Florida

The Wilbraham & Monson Junior Varsity Baseball team lost to the Ontario 14s 10-5 Friday at the Vero Beach Sports Complex.

The Titans led 5-2 in the fourth inning before Ontario scored a run in the fourth, four in the fifth and three more in the sixth.

Luke Pelletier '15 gave WMA an encouraging outing, with the right-hander pitching four-plus strong innings.

Hobey Bryne '14 scored on a sacrifice fly by Nick Kubacki '16 in the top of the first, but Ontario took the lead with a pair of runs in the second.

WMA regained the lead, 3-2, when Hobey and Joey Mack '15 scored on an infield error in the third. The Titans added two more runs in the fourth when Mike Suglia '16 ripped an RBI triple along the right field line, and Joey followed with an RBI groundout.

Nick made the best defensive play of the game, making a nice catch from his catcher position along the backstop on a foul pop-up.

The Titans wrap up their Florida trip with a game against Kimball Union Friday at 7 p.m.

Baseball ties Ontario 17s in Game 4 of Florida trip

Things are starting to click for the Wilbraham & Monson Academy Baseball team.

The Titans received a clutch pitching performance from Joey Mack '15 and WMA rallied late to tie the Ontario 17s 8-8 at the Vero Beach Sports Complex Thursday.

The outcome was particularly impressive because Ontario plays throughout the country for the majority of the year, while WMA was outside for just the third time this season.

"The players are starting to buy in," WMA coach Casey Brown said.

Joey gave WMA 5.2 innings of quality work. Most of the runs he allowed were unearned, due to seven errors by the Titans.

"Joey stepped up for us," Coach Brown said.

Kenny Goodnow '13 scored on a groundout by Bryant Colon '13 in the second inning to tie the game 1-1. WMA took a 4-3 lead in the fourth with a two-run single by Bryant and safety squeeze by Aidan Barrett '13.

Ontario scored three unearned runs in the fifth, but the Titans answered right away with three more runs to take a 7-6 lead with sacrifice flies by Kenny and Bryant, and an RBI single by P.J. Jasak '14.

Ontario regained the lead in the sixth with two runs, but the Titans showed some life with two outs when Alex Caldwell '14 doubled and scored on a throwing error to tie the score 8-8.

P.J. pitched a scoreless seventh for WMA.

Baseball earns forfeit win over Choate in Florida

The Wilbraham & Monson Academy Baseball team earned a forfeit win over Choate Wednesday at the Vero Beach Sports Complex when Choate opted to not take the field for the bottom of the seventh inning.

Pitcher Mike Suglia '16, making his first start, gutted out six innings for the Titans. The left-hander featured a good curveball.

WMA scored three times in the first inning and three more in the third to tie the game 6-6. P.J. Jasak '14 came through with the big hit in the third with a two-run double.

Scott Bicknell '14 had a great day at the plate for the Titans, with a single, double and a triple.

WMA plays Ontario of Canada Thursday at 7 p.m. under the lights.

Baseball drops exhibition opener in Florida

The Wilbraham & Monson Academy Baseball team lost a heartbreaker Tuesday morning at the Vero Beach Sports Complex in Florida, falling to Ontario of Canada 11-10.

The Titans led 10-0 before Ontario scored nine runs in the bottom of the sixth and two more in the seventh.

Despite the loss, plenty of positives games out of WMA's first game of 2013:

  • Aiden Barrett '13 no-hit Ontario in his four innings of work. The hard-throwing righty struck out two and walked one.
  • Kenny Goodnow '13 cracked a three-run triple down the left field line, and also made a nice running catch in left field off Ontario's first batter of the game.
  • Reliever Mike Suglia '16 got the Titans out of a jam in the sixth.
  • Joey Mack '14 ripped two hard singles up the middle.
  • R.C. Goodman '15 poked a double to deep center field.

WMA plays John Cooper High School of Texas Tuesday at 7 p.m. under the lights at Holman Stadium, which is the main field at the Vero Beach facility.
